Irk Fanokin was born in Ankara,
Turkey, of American parents in 1962. His father was a His father was on long-term assignment to Turkey in both military, and later, in diplomatic service. Irk attended various Turkish educational institutions, showing an early disposition for artistry. He moved to New York in 1978, settling in a Village loft, pursuing his creative urges. His works have appeared at hundreds of galleries around the world, and are prized possessions in many private collections. A 1989 acrylic work titled "Liza" sold in a private transaction for a reported $1.8 million U.S. Irk has been profiled in the New York Record, the San Francisco Daily News, the Atlanta Tribune and Washington (D.C.) Daily Chronicle newspapers. His U.S. television appearances include the Jefferson News Hour, Art & More, and Artist Lifestyles. In 1987, Irk married the former Lyndsay Mariposa, the journalist who interviewed him for the San Francisco Daily News. They and their three children currently reside in an exclusive gated community in Crockett's Bluff, Arkansas.
